Overview
A wellness entrepreneur approached me with a vision: create a journaling platform that didn't feel clinical or overwhelming. Most journaling apps on the market were either too complex or too basic. She wanted something that felt like a warm conversation with yourself—simple, beautiful, and genuinely helpful for mental wellness. Together, we built DiaryDot and grew it into a community of mindful journalers finding clarity through daily reflection.
The Challenge
The challenge wasn't just technical—it was emotional. How do you create a digital space that feels safe enough for vulnerability? The platform needed to balance structure (prompts) with freedom (open journaling), provide value daily without becoming overwhelming, and build features that encourage consistency without guilt. Plus, I had to solve the 'blank page problem' that makes journaling intimidating for beginners.
The Solution
I built DiaryDot with Next.js for a fast, app-like experience. The core innovation was the 'Future Letter' feature—users write to their future selves, and the platform delivers it months later. This created emotional investment and return visits. I curated 365 unique prompts to ensure fresh inspiration daily, designed a minimal UI that removes distractions, and built a newsletter system to nurture the community beyond the platform.
The Process
User Research & Validation
Interviewed 30+ journalers to understand pain points with existing apps. Discovered that most felt either too complex or too basic. Built an MVP with 30 prompts and tested with a small group.
Core Development
Built the platform with Next.js and React, focusing on performance and mobile experience. Designed a calming, minimal interface using Tailwind. Integrated secure authentication and data privacy controls.
Content Creation
Wrote and curated 365 unique journaling prompts covering themes like gratitude, growth, relationships, and self-discovery. Each prompt designed to be thought-provoking but not overwhelming.
Community Building
Launched with Product Hunt, grew Instagram to create a supportive community, and built email automation for prompt delivery and engagement. Focused on creating genuine connections, not just user growth.
